Behind the Magic: A Deep Dive into Lash Serum Ingredients

When Tara Bogna discovered lash serum in her mother’s makeup drawer during college, she fell in love with the results, but experienced some irritation. She embarked on a mission to find a better formula, testing countless brands along the way but never finding the perfect match. Tara realized if she wanted a product that was held to higher standards, she’d have to make it herself. She teamed up with her brother, Trevor, and together they created Lash Spell eyelash serum containing ingredients that were gentle, yet highly effective.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lash Serum

Lash serums are applied close to your eyes at the base of your lashes. When formulators aren’t selective about the ingredients in their lash serums, they can create products that cause redness, itching, swelling, allergic reactions and darkening of the eyelids. Like anything you put on or in your body, it’s important to know what it’s made of.

Lash Spell was specially formulated with ingredients that help promote the look of strength and protect lashes. Our formulation is a unique blend of lash-enhancing, conditioning and fortifying ingredients, specifically designed to target eyelashes from every angle. Not only are our ingredients gentle on the eyes and safe for all skin types, they’re dermatologist and ophthalmologist tested and consumer approved.

The Magic Ingredients in Lash Spell

To improve the appearance of lashes, Lash Spell uses a blend of biotin, peptides, allantoin and pumpkin seed extract.

Biotin works to strengthen, nourish and protect the lashes. It is naturally found in foods we eat like egg yolks, nuts and mushrooms, and is considered one of the B complex vitamins.

From soybeans, we get peptides that help to promote stronger and longer-looking lashes. To moisturize and soothe your lashes while improving lash durability and flexibility we use allantoin. Allantoin is a naturally occurring chemical compound that can be found in plants and is used commonly in beauty products for its anti-irritant effects.

The fourth key ingredient in Lash Spell is pumpkin seed extract. It’s exactly what it sounds like — oil extracted from the seeds of pumpkins and is commonly used in beauty products to get rid of dead skin cells and increase cell turnover. In Lash Spell, the extract works as a volumizer that provides a more luscious-looking lash.

We’ve intentionally avoided harsh chemicals so that our products are safe for users with all skin types. Since cosmetic eye products can find their way to the eye surface where they can cause damage, optometrists recommend avoiding products with these harmful ingredients:

  • Benzalkonium Chloride (BAK)
  • Coal tar hair dyes and other coal tar ingredients
  • Ethanolamines (MEA/DEA/TEA)
  • Formaldehyde
  • Hydroquinone
  • Oxybenzone
  • Parabens (methyl-, propyl-, isobutyl-, and others)
  • Petroleum distillates
  • Phthalates (DBP, DEHP, DEP)
  • Polyethylene glycol
  • Propylene glycol (Used in other leading serums on the market)
  • Retinyl acetate, retinoic acid, retinol (Vitamin A Palmitate)
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
  • Toluene
  • Triclosan and Triclocarban

Things You Should Know as a Consumer

For the best possible outcomes, it’s important to educate yourself about the ingredients in the products you use. Review the full ingredient label and avoid any products that contain items from the list above.

Anytime you apply a cosmetic product to your skin and you get a rash or experience a reaction, you should stop using the product immediately and contact your dermatologist. A dermatologist can run tests to determine if your rash is due to allergies or other skin issues, such as atopic dermatitis (eczema), seborrheic dermatitis or facial dandruff.

If you’re unfamiliar with ingredients and aren’t aware of any allergies, you can start with a patch test. Apply a very small amount of Lash Spell on a narrow section of your eyelashes to see how your body reacts. If there isn’t any tingling or redness, apply Lash Spell to the entire lash the next day.

It’s also important to follow the application directions. Lash Spell should only be applied as a single swipe at the base of the eyelashes (not the eyelid!) ONCE a day. However, Brow Spell can be applied to your natural brow shape in the morning and at night. Using any product more than the recommended amount can irritate your eyes or skin.

Implementing a consistent routine to follow these directions is also how you can get the best results. Some users see longer- and fuller-looking lashes in as soon as four weeks with daily use. Others notice results at the six, eight or 12-week mark. Once your desired look is achieved, you can use the product every two to three days to maintain your results.

Expert Insights

We sat down with Lash Spell’s cofounder, Tara, to learn more about her natural beauty journey. As someone with sensitive skin, she’s had to be cautious her entire life about the products she uses. The first lash serums she tried caused eyelid irritation, and she was torn because she loved the results, but the ingredients weren’t gentle enough for her. Motherhood has also made Tara more mindful of the ingredients in products.

When she and Trevor worked with their formulator to develop Lash Spell, they were committed to creating a product that was safe and effective. Having done their research on cosmetic ingredients, they had already identified a few they wanted to use for their nourishing and strengthening properties. Throughout development, every ingredient was stringently evaluated and questioned, and only those that would benefit lashes made the cut.

Behind the Scenes: Lash Spell’s Commitment to Quality

Tara and Trevor found their perfect formula, but their commitment to their customers doesn’t end there. None of their products are tested on animals, and to ensure ongoing quality and safety, they proactively run stability and efficacy studies.

When looking for the right eyelash serum, Tara strongly recommends researching ingredients from reputable sources and looking for products that are optometrist and ophthalmologist approved.

Above all, Tara loves how Lash Spell brings out your natural beauty, giving users confidence so they can put their best foot forward every day. Treat yourself and try Lash Spell gentle eyelash serum today!
