How to Create Glass-Skin Makeup Look

February 01, 2022

natural makeup look, the how to on glass skin with makeup artist sofia rose

We had the pleasure of working with makeup artist, Sofia Fisher for a shoot with Samantha recently. She was so kind to give us all the tips on how to achieve this minimal makeup look. Thank you Sofia!

I had such a fun time breaking down Sam’s “glossier-esque” makeup look that we shot for Lash Spell! We had sooo much fun creating and shooting this look!! So of course we had to do a little product breakdown for y'all!  I'm going to be listing everything we talked about in the live (in case you missed it) and maybe some alternatives as well ;) (you know, because we all like those options amiright?)

Alright let's get into it!!  I know I probably sound like a broken record, but for this look, it really is all in the SKIN PREP!!!! I know that you’ve heard this before, but hear me out, Sam’s makeup look was almost all skin products and VERY little makeup. OF COURSE you can intensify any part of the look in any way that feels most comfortable for you and your face (isn’t that what makeup is all about?! Playing & finding what works best for you!!!!).

Something that may look really good on one person could look totally unnatural on the other. That's the art of makeup!!!!! But as I said if you want that glassy-skin look - buckle up and get your notepad ready! OKAY! Play around, have some fun and don’t take yourself too seriously. LETS GOOOOO!

LET’S START WITH SKIN PREP !!

Sephora Caffeine Eye Masks -  just do yourself a favor here and try one of these out, I mean they ARE $3 ;);)  I promise you will be going back ASAP buying as many more as you can get your hands on. I’ve tried a lot of other eye masks but always find myself coming back to these because they are soooo hydrating and do seem to temporarily brighten dark circles.

Pro tip: Apply eye masks as EARLY on in your skin prep routine as possible (after washing your face or toning it) to ensure your under-eyes are getting ALL the juices from those patches.

Tatcha The Kissu Lip Mask- I always like to apply a lip mask (more hydrating than a balm) on my client first things first when glamming. (Letting the Lip Mask and the Eye Mask sit for as long as possible will get you glowy baby!!)

Alternatives that I also like: Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask &/or  Milani Rose Butter Lip Mask (Dupe for Laneige)

Tula Rose Glow & Get it Cooling & Brightening Eye Balm- After you remove the eye patches from the face, I added some of this Eye Balm to the under-eyes and high points of the cheeks to give just a lil more moisture and some rose gold reflect as well. This product is also really good for a day that you don't want to wear makeup, but still want a lil somethin' somethin'.

Living Libations All Seeing Opulent Eye Cream- You guys…. This is the ONLY eye cream that I find VERY worth purchasing. I always felt like under eye creams were kinda a bit of a gimmick, like if you have a good moisturizer/cream, why would you also need an under eye cream right? Well no. I was pleasantly surprised at how nourishing, glowy and HYDRATING this is. Do yourself a BIG favor and try it out, I'm tellin’ you.

Pro Tip: If you have creasing in your makeup after setting it (or just from having it on all day) warm this eye cream up on your ring finger and lightly tap those creases away. You're welcome in advance. ;)

Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré- this cream is SooOooo good for all skin types but especially sensitive skin!! It literally acts as a moisturizer, primer, and mask all in one. Usually creams are super thick and matte (which I like at times), but this one is more watery and dewy while still really moisturizing your skin. THAT'S A PLUS FOR A GLASSY SKIN LOOK!

Weleda Skin Food Original Ultra-Rich Cream- If you had to buy only ONE THING from this list to give you glassy skin, THIS would be the product!!!!! Now this is a thick thick creme with A TON of natural, lit-from-within glowiness. I applied this to Sam’s high points of her face and body to naturally reflect the light (also under her eyes to really get that hydration) , but if you're feeling REALLLY frisky (and dry lol) you could use this as a moisturizer for your entire face.

MAKEUP PRODUCTS!

Mac Studio Face and Body Foundation in “N1”- For this look, you don't want the makeup to be the center of attention here, but instead the skin! Using a tinted moisturizer or something like Mac F&B will ensure that you have an even base while still allowing your skin to show through !!! *chefs kiss*

Alternative: Kevyn Aucoin Stripped Nude Skin Tint in “Medium ST 04”

Pro Tip: If you still want a similar look, but with more coverage/ pigment, try using Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation

Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer in “Honey”- This concealer is a must-have in my eyes !!!!! There is nothing like it! I recommend finding a peachy shade that works best with your skin color. My pro-tip I gave on the live about concealer is to let it SIT ON YOUR FACE & GET TACKY before blending it out! Gives you more coverage for those dark circles with little product!

Yensa Sunlit Glow Silk Bronzing Base: My FAVORITE cream bronzer that I always find myself coming back to!!!! I love how the color is a perfect blend of warm and cool tones AND it is also SO buildable! You can apply it sheer or heavier. LOVE!

Alternative: Nars Laguna Liquid Bronzer is a similar payoff but in liquid form

RCMA Color Process Foundation in “Shinto 1”- This part of the makeup can be done with ANY cream foundation you have!!! I like to take the time to analyze the face for any dark spots, pimples, etc. to place the cream onto for more coverage! I always blend the cream foundation from the center of the “imperfection” outwards.

Honest Beauty Crème Cheek Blush in “Peony Pink”- If you haven't tried out creme blushes, here is a good one to start with to try em out!!!!! This is the exact blush I used to create Sam’s look but if I had the option now, I would use Youthforia’s Chemical Reaction Blush Oil!

Alternative: Youthforia “Chemical Reaction” Blush Oil -  THE MAGICAL COLOR CHANGING BLUSH THAT YOU SEE ALLL OVER THE INTERNET !!! It is sooo dewy and gorgeous for that lit-from-within kind of look! Because it's an oil, it REALLY reflects the light off of your face while giving you a perfect blushed look.

Alternative: Shiseido Minimalist Whipped Powder Blush in “Chiyoko 02”- If you are already a hardcore blush lover, try this one out!!!!! It is like a barbie doll pink & looks so pretty on the cheeks.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Pro Palette- So Sam has STUNNING freckles all over her face, and after I finish applying all of the face pigments, I always like to go in with a brow powder and a small pointer/pencil brush to accentuate and add more dimensions to her freckles!

Pro-Tip: You can also use this technique if you don't have freckles! Just use a few different brow shades and maybe even a brow liner to add dimension and different freckle intensity! P.s. Make sure to tap over the freckles with your fingers to really melt the product into your skin.

WBCO Soap Brows: I used a spoolie and this Soap Brow on Sam to place her eyebrow hairs in the position I wanted them to stay in!

Pro-Tip:  You can also use a spoolie and ANY hairspray you have laying around to achieve a very similar look

Surratt Relevee Eyelash Curler-  Because we wanted to take some pictures with no mascara, curling the lashes was a MUST!!!! I know this curler is a little on the pricier side, but trust me on this one, IT IS SO WORTH IT!!! It adds such a good curl to your lashes that lasts SOOOO long. You’ll never have to worry about “boxy” eyelashes with this curler, let me tell ya!

*optional* Ben Nye “Dark Brown” Mascara- If you are someone who feels naked without mascara, but still wants to keep it SUPER natural, I always opt for a brown mascara! It really is a game changer and I always make sure I have one on deck (I ALWAYS use brown mascara on my lower lashes ;))

*optional* One Size Translucent Powder-  This is one of my favorite loose translucent powders!!!!! The key to using powder for a glassy skin look like this is to make sure you are using a small, fluffy, eyeshadow brush and stare at yourself in the mirror LOL. ONLY APPLY the powder in spots where you don’t love the glow (usually it will seem “oily” to the eye). Take your time with this step & LESS IS MORE HERE!!

Mario Badescu Rose Water Facial Spray- Lastly, a nice rose spray to just further add moisture to your gorgeous face!! Voila!!! You glow girl

Pro-Tip: I always use this before mascara so that the mascara doesn't run.
