Scalp oil is all over our TikTok’s FYP at the moment. It is used to deepen the moisture of your hair by providing it with a healthy glossy sheen that not only looks great, but has many benefits for the hair too.
Certain oils, such as coconut oil, argan oil, and jojoba oil, are known for their moisturizing and nourishing properties, and can help improve the health and appearance of the scalp and hair. These oils can help to soothe a dry, itchy, or flaky scalp, and can also help to improve the overall strength and shine of the hair.
However, it's important to note that not all scalp oils are created equal, and some may be better suited for certain hair and scalp types than others. Additionally, using too much oil or using the wrong type of oil can actually worsen certain scalp and hair conditions, so it's important to do your research and find one that is good for your skin and scalp.
A scalp oil that has been on our radar lately is the JVN scalp oil, created by Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness. It is a pre-wash scalp oil that heals brittle hair. It contains Rosemary Extract that has been said to promote longer-looking hair over time.
Scalp oil can be beneficial for several reasons, including:
Moisturizing the scalp: A moisturizing scalp oil is good in the winter as it can help to moisturize the scalp and prevent dryness. A dry scalp can lead to itching, flakiness, and other discomforts that the cold weather brings on.
Nourishing the hair: Scalp oil can help to nourish and strengthen the hair follicles, leading to healthier, stronger hair that is less prone to breakage. Less breakage = longer & stronger hair.
Stimulating hair growth: Some types of scalp oil, such as castor oil, have been shown to stimulate hair growth and improve hair thickness and density.
Reducing inflammation: Scalp oil can help to reduce inflammation on the scalp, which can contribute to issues like dandruff, eczema, and psoriasis. Another win for winter skin and scalp syndrome.
Promoting relaxation: Massaging scalp oil into the scalp can be a relaxing and calming experience, reducing stress and tension in the body. Bonus points if you combine a scalp oil with a plastic scalp massager for the ultimate relaxation experience!
Protecting the scalp: Scalp oil can help to protect the scalp from environmental pollutants, harsh chemicals, and other irritants that can damage the scalp and hair.
But what if you have naturally oily hair? Not all scalp oils target hydration, although that is one of the major benefits of most oils! Scalp oils can also be beneficial for people that may experience:
Dry or flaky scalp: Scalp oil can help to soothe a dry or flaky scalp, reducing itchiness and discomfort.
Frizzy or brittle hair: Scalp oil can help to nourish and strengthen the hair, reducing frizziness and breakage.
Slow hair growth: Some types of scalp oil, such as castor oil, have been shown to stimulate hair growth with regular use.
Thinning hair: Scalp oil can help to strengthen hair follicles and reduce hair loss, promoting thicker, fuller hair.
Damaged hair: Scalp oil can help to protect and repair damaged hair, reducing split ends and breakage.
Scalp oil is all the rage right now and we are excited to join the TikTok trend and try it out!
